Storm Erosion In Montauk 'Rough And Significant': Police

Some roadways remain closed and 400 remain without power, police say.

MONTAUK — Tuesday's storm slammed East Hampton and Montauk, leaving major erosion, flooding and loss of power.

According to East Hampton Town Police Chief Michael Sarlo, "Erosion in Montauk was rough and significant, with extremely high tides and heavy surf pounding the shoreline, particularly during the high tide cycles."

Otis Road in Ditch Plains and South Essex Street and South Emerson beach access points completely washed over, and rain run off flooded those areas out, so police closed the roadways for now, he said.

"We are working to get roads opened up as the tides and run off subsides, and the parks and highway departments are working on clearing out any debris, so the roadways become passable again during the day," Sarlo said.

PSEG Long Island reported about 400 homes without power, mostly in Amagansett, south of the highway; the hope is that power will be restored by about 3:30 p.m. today, he said.
