Unlicensed Man Stopped for Cell Phone Violation in East Hampton Turned Over to Interpol, Wanted in Brazil

The man was wanted for a crime in Brazil, police said.

EAST HAMPTON, NY - A man stopped for using a cell phone in East Hampton on Monday was wanted for a crime in Brazil, police said.

According to East Hampton Village Police, Wesley De Oliveira Costa, 28, of Holtsville, was stopped for a cell phone violation and was also arrested and charged with unlicensed operation.

Prior to his release, De Oliveira Costa was identified as being the subject of an Interpol Red Notice, which is not a warrant but means that he is wanted by officials for a crime in that country, police said.

Upon further inquiry, it was determined that he was subject to arrest by U.S. Customs and Immigration, police said. De Oliveira Costa was released on local charges and turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents, police said.

His wanted status information in his native country was turned over to the Department of Justice's Interpol Washington office, responsible for the handling of Interpol related inquiries and wanted messages, police said.
