63-Year-Old Inmate Dies at Nassau County Jail: Police

Police found the man "not breathing" on Monday morning, police say.

EAST MEADOW, NY - A 63-year-old inmate at the Nassau County Correctional Facility died in jail on Monday morning, according to Nassau County Police.

Officers along with the Ambulance Bureau responded to a call at facility located on 100 Carman Avenue in East Meadow, for an inmate not breathing at about 6:30 a.m., police said.

Upon arrival medical, personnel were aiding the inmate, but after further assessment he was pronounced dead by a Nassau County Police Department paramedic at 6:42 a.m. and was transported to the Nassau University Medical Center, police said.

The Homicide Squad and the Nassau County Medical Examiner’s Office are conducting an active investigation.

Dr. Dean Hart, of the Long Island Citizens for Good Association, was to join former inmates of jail to discuss the inmate's death and to "describe the life threatening conditions and improper health care they received" at a press conference Monday morning, according to a press release.
