AHRC Nassau Annual Walk Makes Strides

AHRC Nassau celebrated their annual walk with over 1,500 walkers gathering in Eisenhower Park, raising over $65,000.

Cheers and applauds filled Eisenhower Park as over 1,500 walkers gathered in support of AHRC Nassau at Eisenhower Park for a morning filled with celebration.

The Grand Marshal was Farmingdale High School teacher and community frontrunner, Lynne Brewer. A teacher and internship coordinator at Farmingdale High School, Brewer’s name is synonymous with service. As a leading volunteer with AHRC Nassau, Brewer is the force behind the fundraising and volunteer efforts for the Farmingdale High School Walk team.

Over the past eight years, Brewer and her AHRC Walk team, made up of colleagues and students, have regularly been the top fundraiser, contributing $30,000 to the Foundation. Overall, the Walk successfully raised over $65,000 in support of children and adults with developmental disabilities throughout Long Island.

Sydney Ross was recognized as the top individual fundraiser, raising $5,100, along with Team Rugby Road as the top team fundraiser, raising $6,635.

Among the many AHRC Nassau supporters were local celebrities, Lee & Morty, beloved stars of recent Swiffer commercials.

A 5K Fun Run was added to the Walk for 2014, with more than a dozen runners participating. Leeana from K98.3’s Morning Show with Steve & Leeana, served as the emcee, providing entertainment throughout the morning alongside Media Sponsor K98.3. Following the Walk, the crowd enjoyed music by Revolution Breakdown, a middle school band made up of Justin Saldana, Michael Lomino, and Alex Schmigelski.

Background: In 1994, the Nassau County AHRC Foundation, a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, was formed to ensure that regardless of budget cuts and changes in the political and economic climate, compassionate, community-based programs for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities will continue now, and for future generations.
