EMFD Annual Fire Prevention Open House is on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 9

Our daily lives have become dependent on phones, tablets, laptops, portable tools, toys, e-bikes, and scooters, to name a few. They all operate on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that store a large amount of energy in a small space. If these batteries are damaged or charged incorrectly, they can overheat and start a fire. The East Meadow Fire Department and the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) have announced "Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower" as the theme for Fire Prevention Week 2026, October 4–10.

As part of Fire Prevention Week, the East Meadow Fire Department will hold its annual Fire Prevention Open House on Friday, October 9, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at fire headquarters, 197 East Meadow Avenue, at Front Street.

New this year, the open house features a smoke trailer to teach fire safety in home smoke conditions, a fun obstacle course for children, a water extinguisher prop, and a propane burn-off kit demonstration by the Nassau County Fire Marshall. Attendees can also enjoy oven fires, roof cutting, vehicle extrication demos, fire truck rides, and free snacks, creating an engaging experience for all.

"The EMFD annual open house is an excellent opportunity to see first-hand the equipment and techniques used to keep our community safe, meet the volunteers, and learn how you can get involved," said Commissioner William J. Neill. "We are always looking for community-minded men and women to join our team as firefighters or EMS volunteers, and we encourage those interested to stop by the open house for more information."
