Around this time of year is typically when most parrots begin to nest and breed. There are some parrots that breed all year long however this year has been a less productive year. I have spoken to many of our breeders regarding this and they attribute it to 2 main reasons.
1) The wild caught breeder parrots from years ago have become too old and are not breeding as often if at all.
2) The weather is effecting the breeding cycle. Some parrots will only breed in the warm weather, ie: Amazons, Indian ringnecks, some Conures etc.

This issue of course has effected the amount of baby parrots available which typically will inflate the price.
We have decided not to increase our prices this year however I would just like to comment about what actually goes into raising these beautiful creatures.

The babies need to be hand fed at least 3 times per day sometimes 4. They need to be kept warm and clean. They need to be handled frequently. They need toys to stimulate their interest and to play. They need to be offered a variety of fresh foods once they are beginning to be weaned from the baby formula. They need to be placed in a cage once they have learned to perch and will become accustomed to climbing and perching.
I am mentioning all of this so that you the consumer are aware of the process. If you are armed with the information, you will be able to determine whether the place where you are purchasing your parrot has taken shortcuts so as to cut expenses.
There are no shortcuts that are acceptable if the parrot is to be raised correctly.
