Doing Good as a Reenactor

One of the pleasures of being a reenactor is that you get plenty of opportunities to help others.

 Ye Pyrate Brotherhood have appeared at several walkathons for various charities over the years.  We will start the walk by firing our guns and spend a couple of hours handing out treasure and encouraging the walkers to keep on going.

 We threw a Pyrate Cannonball (Think a Christmas party with pirates.) that raised money for Cystic Fibrosis and held a fundraiser to help meet the medical expenses of a woman battling breast cancer.

 We entertained aboard a Manhattan Circle Line cruise for the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation.  What a blessing it is to be able to provide some respite for the families who are dealing with this health issue and helping a child forget, however briefly, his illness.

 The Society for Creative Anachronisms has often taken up collections for Toys for Tots at their events.

 As reenactors, we can help fire the love of history in a child.  Inspire in that child a sense of adventure, introduce him to a new skill or hobby that will keep him off the streets.  Maybe an adult will find a new hobby through us that will enrich his or her life.

 If your appearance at a local event helps attracts visitors and their dollars to an economic depressed area that is a good deed indeed.

 These are some of the ways the reenactment community can help out their local charities.
