Talking Heads

My kids don't like when I do this; I can't help myself. I may have inherited this trait from my mother. Blame it on her!

I cannot believe she is dragging us around from store to store. She won't stop until she finds the right dress! Our feet are tired and our backs hurt. Sitting on this little ledge, by the mirror, is so uncomfortable! Geeze, you would think she'd have an ounce of compassion for her daughters. We look up and listen.

"This has a little brown in it (Pulling the hanger closer). It should go with my shoes (Tilting head upwards towards ceiling). Let me think (Thinking). Oh, he'll just kill me if I come home with new shoes, too! (Shaking her head, as if dismissing that thought). Hmmm. I don't know(Glancing at her wrist watch). I'm just not sure (Biting bottom lip). Oh, gosh. I just am not sure!"

"Mom! This is the perfect dress for you, isn't it Krissy?!"

(My cue) I get up from the two inch ledge, which served as my bench, for the past hour. "I love it," I answer. "It has a little brown, so it WILL go with your brown heels. I know daddy will love it."

"Come on, Mom. It's a great dress and you looked terrific in it. Buy it." Mother smirked and took another minute staring at the floral print dress that hung loosely on its hanger. She checks the price tag for the tenth time. Finally.. "OK. I'm getting it!"

All the way home, one question keeps popping up in my head. 'Why does mom talk to herself? It's so weird. I am so not doing that when I get to be her age!

Her age..."This is so pretty, but she may not like it," I say audibly, to myself. I place the vase back on the stand and move over to the next one. "Awww.. now, this is so beautiful." I tilt my head a little to the right and look at the bright colors of the little vase. Perching my lips, and bringing the vase more closely, I examine the fine craftsmanship involved in producing such a fine piece of china. "Yep. This is it!" Carefully, I turn the vase, to find the price. "Good price." I look around for a salesperson. "Oh, boy," I say, disappointedly, as I blow out some air." Now, to find a salesperson." To my surprise, I hear a pleasant voice behind me.."Here I am. How may I assist you?"

I have grown to be my mother. It's not such a bad thing. I mean, I didn't want it to happen; it just did.  But the one trait, that I did NOT want to inherit..was..her inate ability to talk to herself, and not be concerned as to who heard her. I did some research and actually conducted a small survey amongst friends. Research shows several interesting conclusions. People who talk to themselves are smarter than your average person. Reassuring oneself, by talking or commenting aloud, is a positive! It makes you more at ease with whatever task you are working on. It's like having a partner alongside you, as you work..or shop..or cook. When in doubt, ask yourself!

Do I get embarrassed when others hear me? Not in the least. They usually understand what I am saying, and why I'm saying it! Most 'listeners' smile in the affirmative. Hey..I can't be the only one that does it, now am I? What I regret is not having recorded the age at which I first started talking to myself! If there is a pattern.I would like my daughters to be prepared!! Hmm..I wonder if men talk to themselves, or is this just a female thing to do?
