Drunk Man Assaults AMT During Ambulance Ride: Police

The AMT used pepper spray on the man but he continued to fight until more officers arrived, Nassau Police say.

EAST MEADOW, NY - A drunk Freeport man was arrested for assaulting an AMT while he was being transported to the hospital on Sunday night in East Meadow, according to Nassau Police.

Freeport Police responded to a home on Ray Street where they found 29-year-old Jose Torres drunk in the front yard at about 10:30 p.m. and called a Nassau County Ambulance to transport him to the hospital, police said.

While stopped at the light at Hempstead Turnpike and 3rd Street, he became agitated, police said.

Torres then began to remove his safety straps and punched the AMT in the face, police said.

Torres pushed him to the ground and continued to punch him in the head and body, police said.

The AMT was able to use his pepper spray, but Torres continued to fight with him until more officers arrived, police said.

They removed Torres from the back of the ambulance to try to place him under arrest, police said.

He continued to resist, but was eventually secured and transported to the hospital.

The AMT was treated for an injury to his hand and wrist, police said.

Torres is charged with second degree assault and resisting arrest, police said.

He will be arraigned on Monday.
