Man Sets Tent on Fire With Man Sleeping Inside at Nassau Preserve: Cops

A 50-year-old man set the tent on fire after the two men had a physical altercation Monday night, police say.

EAST MEADOW, NY - An East Meadow man was arrested after setting fire to a tent with a man sleeping inside on Monday night, according to State Police.

Police responded to a fire complaint at the Hempstead Plains Preserve, located west of the Meadowbrook State Parkway and east of James Doolittle Boulevard in Uniondale, at about 9:15 p.m.

An investigation revealed that 50-year-old Bradley E. Storey set the tent that 27-year-old Jon Weiss was sleeping in on fire after the two had a physical altercation, police said.

Weiss woke up to find his tent on fire and while trying to escape, he suffered burns on his legs and feet, police said.

He was transported to Nassau University Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.

Storey was charged with second degree arson, second degree assault and first degree reckless endangerment, police said.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.
