The Divine Liturgy for the Feast of Pentecost (50 days after Orthodox Easter) will be celebrated on Sunday, May 31 at 9:30 AM (Hours at 9:00 AM) at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 369 Green Avenue, East Meadow. The services will be conducted in English and will be streamed on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/htocem" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.facebook.com/htocem</a>. In addition to the Divine Liturgy, the services will include Vespers with the Pentecost kneeling prayers and an outdoor procession (weather permitting). A BBQ for the parish’s feast day will be held after the services ($20 per adult and free for children). Register for our summer reading club and join us for our Pub Quiz Night!The Reader Services Department of the East Meadow Public Library is thrilled to announce the kickoff of our 15th annual Adult Summer Reading Club on Monday, June 8th. Our Kickoff will end with a Pub Quiz Night in the Library at 7 pm. Pub Quizzes are popular trivia contests in the UK, and while we won’t be serving up alcohol, we will serve up a night of fun and tricky trivia around our theme Unearth a Story. Bring your own team or meet new people by joining one that night.
The registration for our reading club will be held in the lobby from 10-12 and 1:30-4:30. Join us on June 15 at 7:00 pm as we discuss Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez. 1985. Anita de Monte, a rising star in the art world, is found dead in New York City; her tragic death is the talk of the town. Until it isn’t. By 1998 Anita’s name has been all but forgotten—certainly by the time Raquel, a third-year art history student is preparing her final thesis. On College Hill, surrounded by privileged students whose futures are already paved out for them, Raquel feels like an outsider. Students of color, like her, are the minority there, and the pressure to work twice as hard for the same opportunities is no secret. But when Raquel becomes romantically involved with a well-connected older art student, she finds herself unexpectedly rising up the social ranks. As she attempts to straddle both worlds, she stumbles upon Anita’s story, raising questions about the dynamics of her own relationship, which eerily mirrors that of the forgotten artist. This story is a propulsive, witty examination of power, love, and art, daring to ask who gets to be remembered and who is left behind in the rarefied world of the elite.
