Inmate Dies In Apparent Drug Overdose At Long Island Jail: Report

Nassau police said a 29-year-old man was taken in a ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

EAST MEADOW, NY — An inmate at the Nassau County Correctional Facility died Wednesday in what appears to be a drug overdose, according to Newsday.

The outlet reported that County Executive Bruce Blakeman confirmed the inmate's death in a statement.

In a news release, Nassau police said a 29-year-old man "suffered a medical episode" while at the facility just before 1 p.m. and he was taken in a police ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead by a physician.

The man's name has not been released by police.

There is an ongoing investigation by the Homicide Squad, police said.

Blakeman told Newsday: "We are sorry for the death of one of our inmates who died of an overdose. There will be a full and transparent investigation to determine how the contraband got into our correctional facility.”
