Man Nabbed After Trying To Scam Elderly Woman: Police

Police say he tried to scam the woman out of $8,000, but was arrested when he picked up the cash.

WESTBURY, NY — A Queens man was arrested after Nassau County police say he tried to scam an elderly woman out of thousands of dollars.

According to police, an 80-year-old woman, who lives out of state, was called on Nov. 3 and told her grandson was arrested and needed money for bail. The woman was told to put $8,000 cash into a package and mail it to an address in Westbury.

Nassau County detectives were contacted by the Postal Service about the package. Detectives watched the address where the package was delivered to see who would pick it up.

At 9 a.m. on Nov. 4, police say Devon Johnson, 31, of 203rd Street, Queens, arrived at the address and picked up the package. He was arrested without incident.

Johnson is charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny. He is scheduled to be arraigned later today.
