Marketing Welcome to Fall 2013

It's been a while since this blog has been active -- but the action and activity associated with marketing and media in late summer and early fall has continued....

More specifics in postings to come -- but consider these changes and challenges going into October 2014:

Holiday promotions will be extremely early this year -- roughly 106 days prior to Christmas KMart started its holiday advertising encouraging layaway. http://adage.com/article/cmo-strategy/105-days-til-christmas-kmart-airs-holiday-ad/244064/

Furthermore, there is suggestion that due to Hanukkah arriving on the Wednesday evening prior to Thanksgiving that online promotions -- Cyber Monday -- for example -- which comes after Black Friday may be as early as October as well.

The use of sexual innuendo to sell packaged goods --  Ragu Tomato Sauce did it last year with a young boy tough childhood: http://mashable.com/2012/08/20/ragu-commercial-parents/
and this year's Green Giant's encouragement to eat a bigger plate of vegetables http://adage.com/article/news/green-giant-x-rated/244196/

Last but not least the onset of SuperBowl frenzy -- most ad space is sold out, and the usual suspects will be there: Anheuser-Busch InBev, Chevrolet, Doritos, Hyundai Motor America and PepsiCo Beverages (to name a few). Expect to spend nearly $4 million for a 30-second commercial spot.

And when it comes to watching -- this is the year that we surpass the amount of time we spend in front of the television (roughly 4.5 hours daily on average)  with time in front of a computer, smartphone or tablet. Mass audience viewing is a thing of the past.
