NYS Comptroller Receives Historical Document from WW1 Centennial Commission

Efforts underway to create a National World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C.

As America observes the centennial of its entry into World War I, New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli receives copies of his grandfather’s honorable discharge papers following his military service during The Great War from New York City Centennial Committee Chairman Dr. Libby O’Connell. Dr. O’Connell, who lost family when a German U-boat sank the Lusitania in 1915, stated, “Much like the experience of Comptroller DiNapoli’s family, World War I continues to directly impact our lives. Few appreciate that this conflict created the contemporary borders of the Middle East and Europe, ushered in the role of technology as the dominant force on the battlefield, set the stage for civil and gender rights, and reinvented America as a world class financial power. Tom’s grandfather was part of that seminal conflict and these documents remind us that every family remains connected to our national heritage.” They were joined by WW I living historian Vincent Brenner. Efforts are underway to create a National World War I Memorial in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the historic legacy of the Great War and the memory of all Americans who served during that global conflict.
