In anticipating this upcoming Sunday's celebration of Mother's Day -- there will be more than a few "Thanks, Mom" commercials that will be shown -- but my favorite are the ones that have just a moment or two of connection between mother and child.
Check out this mainstay from SuperBowl 2013 in which kids need to stand up to the bullies and get to the "game" site with Mom's car. (see :05 for the nod). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjBPUdLOVHU
Or this "Got Milk?" commercial in which Salma Hayek does whatever it takes to get the product on the table for breakfast (see :52 for the moment of truth!).
Then there are the others that give Mom a lot of her due: the February rather than May P&G "Thank you MOM" yearly series that center around the heartfelt work it takes to be an Olympian and who's there every step of the way -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57e4t-fhXDs.
Or the Old Spice's "Momsong" http://www.oldspice.com/en-US/videos.aspx that takes "Mom-dom" to a whole new level. (Ironic that Old Spice's parent company is P&G.)
Ultimately these ads are a simple way of suggesting that you don't need a holiday to celebrate Moms and what they can do for their kids.
It's all in the storytelling (and storyselling).
