WESTBURY, NEW YORK—The Westbury School District community came together in a powerful display of unity, passion, and Dragon pride during the year’s homecoming celebration. The day began with the Elaine Lovell Pancake Breakfast, continued with a spirited parade, and concluded on the football field, with exceptional performances from student groups and an impressive 62-12 victory by the varsity football team over Uniondale High School.

“Homecoming is about more than a game,” Westbury Superintendent Dr. Tahira A. DuPree Chase said. “It is about the people who make Westbury home, the traditions that bring us together, and the pride we carry long after the final whistle. When Westbury comes together as one, there is so much to celebrate.”

The festivities began with the Elaine Lovell Pancake Breakfast, as members across the district community came together to share a meal, reconnect, and celebrate Westbury spirit while honoring the legacy of the late Elaine Lovell. This was followed by a vibrant parade through the town that included performances, floats, and marches by students, administrators, faculty, staff, and community organizations. Elaine Lovell was named honorary grand marshal.

This year’s theme of classic video games inspired waves of creativity. The central administration float showcased a Ms. Pacman theme, the Westbury High School seniors showcased a Star Wars theme, and the juniors represented the Sims. The sophomores’ Pokémon float featured giant Poké Balls and Pikachu costumes, and the freshman class opted for a retro approach with a Pacman theme, as did Westbury Middle School with its Donkey Kong theme. Drexel Avenue Elementary School followed in the parade represented by Sonic the Hedgehog, Powells Lane Elementary School displayed a Tetris theme, Park Avenue Elementary School had a Super Mario Brothers theme, and Dryden Street School completed the school floats and marching while representing Excite Bike.

The parade concluded at Westbury High School, where attendees entered the stands with excitement and joy. The Dragons varsity football team were spectacular in their statement win, accruing 62 points and holding the Uniondale Knights to 12 points. The high school marching band and cheer team also both delighted audiences with their outstanding performances.

The homecoming court included Jada Branch and Mark Anthony Guervara for the class of 2027, Loangy Sierra and Jahlyl Barrett for the class of 2028, Grace Bustillo and Schuyler Mason for the class of 2029, Valerie Gomez and Nia Bostic for the class of 2030, and Tatiana Abrego and Juancarlos Moya Mayen for Westbury Middle School.

“The success of homecoming would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of the many individuals who helped bring the celebration to life,” Dr. Chase said. “The district relays special thanks to everyone who contributed their time and energy to make the day meaningful and memorable.”
