What East Meadow Wants To See At The Home Depot Site

With the store moved, there's prime real estate available. Here's what residents are hoping will replace the home improvement giant.

Over the summer, Home Depot moved from its longtime home in East Meadow on Hempstead Turnpike down the block to a new, larger store in Levittown. Now, there's prime real estate sitting vacant.

Home Depot's new location in Levittown was a former K-Mart site that sat vacant for two decades. No one wants that to happen to East Meadow. Situated on Hempstead Turnpike close to both Nassau University Medical Center and Nassau Coliseum, it's some prime real estate.

So we took to Facebook to ask East Meadow residents what they wanted to see there, and received a wide array of responses.

One of the most popular responses was that residents wanted a Christmas Tree Shops on the site. The seasonal retailer only has two Long Island locations: one in Deer Park, and another in Riverhead.

Another popular suggestion was to turn the space into an activity center of some kind. Residents suggested go karts, indoor rock climbing, basketball and batting cages — basically something that people of all ages could enjoy.

Other suggestions included:

  • Lowe's/hardware store
  • Hobby Lobby/craft store
  • Housing
  • Trader Joe's
  • Home Goods or TJ Maxx
  • Bass Pro Shop
  • Affordable housing
  • The largest 7-Eleven ever (pretty sure that one's a joke, but it would be kind of cool)
