Bethpage Woman Avoids Disaster After Finding A Grenade In Her Basement, Police Say

A Bethpage woman was cleaning her basement Wednesday morning when she found a World War II-style grenade, police say.

BETHPAGE, NY — A Bethpage woman avoided calamity Wednesday morning after finding what police called a "WWII style grenade" in her basement as she was cleaning it, police said.

Nassau County police said the 60-year-old woman was cleaning out the basement just before 11 a.m. Wednesday when she found a "possible explosive device." The woman called the police, who responded and secured the home with help from county emergency services and arson/bomb personnel, police said.

According to police, the grenade was removed from the home, taken to a safe location and destroyed. Police did not say how the grenade got into the basement or if any additional explosives were found there, but said an investigation is ongoing.

As of Wednesday afternoon, police said there was no further risk to the public.
