Battery Pack Explodes Under Republic Airport, Causing Fire

Firefighters quickly responded to the underground pump room, dousing the fire on Monday morning.

EAST FARMINGDALE, NY — A battery pack exploded in a pump room under the Republic Airport in East Farmingdale on Monday morning, causing a fire, Suffolk County Fire Rescue Services told Patch.

Firefighters arrived to the underground room on New Highway around 10:40 a.m. and doused the flames before they could spread, according to Suffolk FRES. The fire did not affect the airport's traffic, FRES said.

The equipment fire was minor, said Stephen Canzoneri, a spokesman for New York State Department of Transportation, said. The fire was quickly extinguished by Republic Airport Fire Rescue with help from the East Farmingdale Fire Department, he said.
