Original story: FARMINGDALE, NY — A man was shot dead in Farmingdale Tuesday night and an NYPD officer may have been the one to pull the trigger, according to Nassau police and news reports.
Nassau police responded to a 911 call for a shooting in the street in front of a Langdon Road home at 8:05 p.m., police said. Officers found the body of a 25-year-old with gunshot wounds, police said.
A rookie NYPD officer assigned to the 109th Precinct in northeastern Queens is being questioned about the shooting after detectives were told he was trying to break up a fight between friends when the shots rang out, ABC7 reported.
The officer was off-duty and hanging out with a few friends when two of them started fighting and he shot one of them to prevent him from hurting the other person, a source told the New York Daily News. The officer then went home and told his father what happened before being taken into custody and questioned, according to the report.
The officer told police he was being punched when he shot the man in the head, police sources told CBS New York.
Nassau police would not confirm that an off-duty NYPD officer was involved in the shooting. The officer has been with the department for seven months, CBS2 New York reported. No charges have been filed.
