Farmingdale High School Students Win Regional Science Bowl
Team Will Next Compete in 2016 U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science National Science Bowl
Farmingdale, N.Y. (February 10, 2016) – The Farmingdale School District recently announced Farmingdale High School students won the Regional Science Bowl. Students will next compete in Maryland for the 2016 U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science National Science Bowl (NSB).
“The District is very proud of our students’ performance in the rigorous Regional Science Bowl championship,” said Farmingdale School District Superintendent John Lorentz. “Excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects is a vital component of the Farmingdale School District’s teaching mission.”
This year Farmingdale High School Robotics Team members, Suraj Muralidharan, Clarise Baes, Ramin Chowdhury, Jake Chammas and Hamza Malick, defeated teams from Jericho High School, Mount Sinai High School, Great Neck South High School during the Regional Science Bowl, receiving an invitation to attend The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl®, one of the nation’s largest national academic competitions.

“The National Science Bowl® continues to be one of the premier academic competitions across the country, and prepares America's students for future successes in some of the world’s fastest growing fields in research and engineering,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz. “I am honored to congratulate all of the competitors who are advancing to the national finals where they will continue to showcase their talents as top students in math and science.”
During the National Science Bowl, teams will face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math with correct responses earning team bonus opportunities. More than 250,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl® throughout its 25-year history, and more than 9,000 high school students will compete in 70 high school regional Science Bowl tournaments in 2016. The top 16 high school teams and the top 16 middle school teams in the National Finals will win $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. Prizes for the top two high school teams for the 2016 NSB will be announced at a later date.

"We look forward to the science bowl every year, and I loved the team’s attitude to always work harder, learn more, and respect each other and the game,” said Farmingdale High School Robotics Team Coach Macchia. "The team earned their victory, and getting to take on an even greater challenge at the National Championship is a great way to celebrate our hard work, help provide a little more motivation to push ourselves over the next three months and of course send some well-prepared students off to college next year.”
