BETHPAGE, NY — Flames originating from the fireplace of a Bethpage home nearly took the house with it on Sunday afternoon.

Bethpage firefighters arrived to the Elizabeth Drive home around 3 p.m., where they were met with billowing smoke, officials said. They found the fire, starting in the fireplace, had already extended into the walls of the home, as well as ceiling of the extension.

The fire was contained to the one room, though that room was heavily damaged.
