A fundraising campaign was recently started on behalf of a disabled Farmingdale State College student whose custom-designed van went up in flames after being hit by a drunk driver this past weekend.

Daniel Ferencsik, 18, who was born with spinal muscular atrophy, used the van to travel from his home in Holbrook to the college.

However early Sunday morning, a drunken driver crashed into two parked vehicles — the van and another car on Avenue B — which then ignited the fire and destroyed the van.

According to the GoFundMe page, started by Topher Momo on behalf of Ferencsik's mother, Theresa, the van was "his lifeline" when it come to getting to and from class.

He now takes public transportation which brings his commute from about 30 minutes to about two hours.

The page was then started to help raise money to help Ferencsik until he gets a new van.

"This fund has been set up to help Daniel out in the time until has the transportation he needs is back where it belongs," the page reads. "Danny has a wonderful family and anything we as a community can do to help them in this time can and should be done."

The goal is to raise a total of $6,500. Since the page was created on Wednesday, $5,735.
