LI Veterans To Receive Recognition At American Airpower Museum

FARMINGDALE, NY — A special Veterans Day program is set to land at the American Airpower Museum.

The event, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 11, is being organized by the museum, Honor Flight Long Island, and Mission Margraten Plus. The museum is at Republic Airport, Hangar 3, 1230 New Highway, Farmingdale.

Long Island veterans will be honored, including five WWII Veterans, two Korean War veterans and three Vietnam War veterans.

"Whether they served in the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Merchant Marines or Coast Guard, all Veterans who defended freedom and U.S. interests during WWII, the Korean and Vietnam Wars, plus later conflicts Iraq and Afghanistan, deserve to be honored," said Jeff Clyman, AAM president, in a news release. "Aware of the risks, our veterans fought in America’s battles against fascism, communism and in defense of liberty worldwide. We’re proud to honor them this Veterans Day."

The museum and Honor Flight Long Island will make welcome remarks at 11 a.m. Then, a Cub Scout Honor Guard will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Next, the museum's WWII Douglas C-47 Skytrain "Second Chance" will perform two tribute flights, weather permitting. Each flight will have on board preselected WWII, Korean and Vietnam war veterans, plus two local high school students whose essays about veterans were chosen as winners in a contest. The first flight is scheduled for noon p.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m.

At exactly 2:11 p.m., two minutes of silence will be observed in accordance with the Veterans Day Moment of Silence Act of 2016.

Two of the WWII veterans, Bill Nacinovich and Dominick Critelli, are 102 years old.

Critelli, a Floral Park resident, played his saxophone at UBS Arena on Sept. 17 with André Rieu. He will perform "America The Beautiful" and the national anthem at the museum on Nov. 11.

Admission for adults is $15; $12 for seniors; $10 for children ages 5 through 12; and free for kids under 5.

Admission is free for veterans and active military.
