Samantha Mayers, a sixth grade student from Howitt Middle School is on a mission to help the Ronald McDonald House.
For the last several months, Samantha has collected pull-tabs with the help of her peers. To date, she has collected close to 500 tabs (from beverage cans). She aspires to collect 1,000 by June 5, 2014.
I’ve heard of pull-tab collections before, but never understood the reason behind it. Samantha explained that metal pull-tabs are melted down at recycling centers and the money is donated to the Ronald McDonald House. The funds are then utilized to house families of children receiving medical care.

Samantha discovered this fundraiser with the help of her aunt. After some research, she fell in love with the idea of “helping people who need assistance”. She is thrilled to initiate the program through Student Council at Howitt Middle School and hopes other schools within the district join this admirable cause.
At the tender age of twelve, Samatha is a compassionate young woman. In addition to her participation in Girl Scouts and Student Council, over the years, she has donated 48 inches of her hair to Locks of Love.

If you wish to help Samantha reach her goal, please save pull-tabs from your favorite beverage cans. You can arrange a pick up of tab collections with Samantha’s mom, Lori, through Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/lori.mcfaddenmayers or if your child attends Howitt Middle School, they can bring their tabs to school. The West Cafeteria has a collection can available during lunch hours. For families who do not have Facebook, feel free to contact Katie McKnight. I will pass a message along to Samantha’s mom. You can reach me at my03sons@optonline.net.
