Nassau County Preparing For Winter Storm

The storm is expected to hit the area on Thursday.

Nassau County officials announced on Wednesday that they have begun to prepare for the winter storm expected to hit the area this week.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Long Island as up to a foot of snow is expected to fall on Long Island Thursday. Wind gusts up to 35 mph will likely create near-blizzard conditions.

On Wednesday, Nassau County Department of Public Works (DPW) began pretreating roadways with brine to prevent black ice from forming.

“Nassau County is helping to ensure residents have a safe commute by brining main County roadways, bridges and overpasses to prevent black ice,” County Executive Edward Mangano. “DPW is at the ready to plow and salt County roadways.”

The Department of Public Works has 18,750 tons of road salt and 2,250 tons of road sand on hand.

In addition, the County's snowfighting fleet includes 115 plow/salt trucks, 20 pick-ups with plows and sanders, 10 payloaders and 3 brine trucks that cover 2,000 lane miles throughout the County.

PSEG Long Island's employees and contractors are also prepared to respond to and restore any outages caused by the storm as quickly and safely as possible.
