The officer was on his way to a 911 call when the drunken driver crashed into his car, police say.
SOUTH FARMINGDALE, NY — A Nassau police officer was injured on his way to a 911 call when a drunken driver crashed into his car Friday night in South Farmingdale, the Nassau County Police Department said.
The officer was driving a marked police car south on Merritts Road near Country Court when he was hit by Raymond D. Matos, 65, of Lynbrook, who was driving a 1997 Ford Ecoline van northbound on Merritts Road at 8:09 p.m., police said. Matos was driving unsafely, police said, as he did not yield the right of way and turned left in front of the officer’s car, causing the crash. The officer was brought to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
Matos was charged with two counts of DWI, third-degree assault and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations. He was arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.
