"Shoes for All" Women's Club of Farmingdale Newest Project
Women's Club members donated bags and bags shoes, boots, sneakers, and flip flops for women, men and children
At the recent Nassau County Women of Distinction Awards, members of the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) met Dr. Mary Carlson, an award winner and alumnus of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine who became the first student to be awarded an APMAS (American Podiatric Medical Association) grant to conduct research in enhancing diagnostic foot x-rays. This research article was published in 1999.

In addition to her practice, Dr. Carlson formed “Shoes for All,” a non-profit organization “because there are families – mothers, fathers and children – who have tremendous financial problems right here in the United States and need our help.” In September 2010, Dr. Carlson began her first shoe drive at a local street fair. The tremendous community support and experience proved that there was an overwhelming need for this type of outreach service. The overall goal is simple: “If you don't want to walk in your shoes, please give them to someone who does. If you have a pair of new or lightly used shoes that you hardly wear, send them our way. We can give them a good home.”

On November 3, at their general meeting, under the leadership of Valerie Thieke and Judy Vilas, women’s club members collected bags and bags of assorted shoes, sneakers and boots for men, women, and children and delivered them to a “Shoes for All” drop-off location. Dr. Carlson was extremely grateful for all the donated shoes but she expressed her need for young children’s shoes, sneakers and boots. The WCF will be getting together on Nov. 17 at the Farmingdale Village Hall to help spruce up Christmas decorations for the village and will, at the same time, have another drive to collect shoes, sneakers, and boots specifically for children. All donations are welcome. For more information, please go to www.shoesforall-sfa.com.
Also collected at the November 3 meeting, were canned goods, food items and monetary donations for the St. Kilian’s Outreach Thanksgiving Day drive under the direction of Rosemary Emigholz and Anna Ievolo.
The Women’s Club of Farmingdale would like to wish everyone a Very Happy Thanksgiving.
