EAST FARMINGDALE, NY — A blanket of snow covered Long Island over the weekend, leaving residents shoveling out cars and clearing pathways after heavy snowfall moved through the area. Amid the cleanup, local volunteer firefighters stepped in to lend a helping hand.

East Farmingdale Volunteer Fire Company's members took the time to spread kindness one shovel at a time for the families of their departed members.

The fire department shared on its Facebook page that some of its Station 1 members helped the families on Sunday: "...because once you're family, you're always family."
