Starkie Bros Garden Center Celebrates 30 Years In Farmingdale

Butch Starkie founded the business with his brother, John. Two of Butch's four children are taking over the day-to-day operations.

FARMINGDALE, NY — Starkie Bros Garden Center of Farmingdale celebrated its 30th year with a ribbon cutting held Friday, the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce announced.

Starkie Bros Garden Center, at 721 Main Street, offers a wide range of products for all indoor or outdoor gardening needs.

As kids, Butch Starkie and his brother, John, started cutting lawns and did odd jobs. Although George "Butch" and John separated their business interests years ago, Starkie Bros lives on. Two of Butch's four children are taking over the day-to-day operations.

George "Hank" Starkie and Nick Starkie are both graduates of Farmingdale State College with degrees in horticulture. Together, with the help of their father and dedicated staff, they offer planting services as well as a one-stop-shop garden center.

"Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce is honored to celebrate this incredible milestone with Starkie Bros Garden Center and we congratulate the Starkie family on their great success," the chamber wrote in a news release.

New York State Sen. Steve Rhoads congratulated the business on its anniversary.

"It was an honor to join the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Oyster Bay, Village of Farmingdale Trustee Cheryl Parisi, and Assemblyman John Mikulin to congratulate George 'Butch' Starkie and his entire family on this incredible milestone," Rhoads wrote on Facebook. "We wish the Starkie family all the best and continued success in the future."
