EAST FARMINGDALE, NY — An October Glory Maple Tree was planted in Michel Park of East Farmingdale by State Farm Agent Joseph Benincasa and his team in recognition of National Good Neighbor Day, which falls on Wednesday, the agency announced.

"My team and I celebrate Good Neighbor Day each year and, this year, we decided to plant a tree to celebrate the day and its mission,” Benincasa stated. “It is our hope and intention this tree brings beauty and provides shade to the children and families who frequent the park for years to come.”

Benincasa thanked Joe and Maryann Campanelli of Campanelli Landscaping for helping to plant the tree. He also thanked the East Farmingdale Kiwanis Club and Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce for their support.

National Good Neighbor Day was established as the fourth Sunday in September 1978 by former president Jimmy Carter. The goal was to connect with and recognize the importance of strong leaders. In 2003, National Good Neighbor Day was changed to Sept. 28 and shifted focus to celebrating the importance of being a good neighbor.

Benincasa said he strives to be a good neighbor throughout the year, as months ago, he coordinated a humanitarian drive for Ukrainian refugees. He also runs an annual scholarship program that benefits local high school students.
