The Women’s Club of Farmingdale Focuses

on Physical Fitness and Mental Health

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs New York State (GFWC NYS) actively encourages its local club members to engage in wellness, literacy, and community building by walking, reading, and playing brain enhancing games. These activities tie directly into the broader GFWC community service programs, specifically focusing on Health and Wellness, as well as Education and Libraries.

Many individual chapters, specifically The Women’s Club of Farmingdale, implement these initiatives through recurring club events:

• Walking: organized a structured, weekly, "walk & talk" fitness routines to keep members physically active and socially connected (weather permitting)
• Reading: Members join club book discussion groups to foster a love for literacy and explore a variety of genres.
• Playing Games: Members host regular social game days, such as weekly Mahjongg games, to promote cognitive health and camaraderie.

The WCF Book Club, chaired by Elaine Ryan, recently read The Boy from the Sea by Garrett Carr; Contraposto by Dave Eggers; The Correspondent by Virginia Evans; The Teacher by Freida McFadden; and Lady Tremaine by Rachel Hochhauser.

Nancy Carman hosts a weekly mahjongg game at the Farmingdale Public Library and Ann Lomonte hosts a weekly “walk and talk” fitness routine at Allen Park.

And once again, the WCF joined with members from the community and St. Kilian’s Choir to serenade the Farmingdale Adult Day Care Center membership for the Labor Day holiday celebrating the American worker, honoring the labor movement and marking the end of summer.
