• Suffolk Set To Spray Ground On 2 Fire Island Communities, 1 For The 2nd Time In A Week (patch.com) — Residents of Davis Park and Water Island on Fire Island are being notified that Suffolk County will conduct ground spraying for mosquitoes Thursday evening, marking the second treatment in a week for Davis Park. The county is using Anvil (sumithrin) as part of its annual mosquito control program and is offering detailed safety tips for minimizing pesticide exposure, especially for children and pregnant women. The effort follows confirmation of a West Nile Virus case in nearby Brookhaven Town and includes hotlines and online resources for spray notices and alerts.
• The Disappearance Of Landscape: The Watermill Center Presents 'Oakleyville, 1964–2022' • James Lane Post • Hamptons Culture & Lifestyle Magazine (jameslanepost.com) — An upcoming Watermill Center exhibition spotlights Oakleyville, a tiny Fire Island community that nurtured generations of queer New York artists. Opening August 29, it showcases paintings, photos, and sculptures created in Oakleyville from the 1960s onward, with a strong focus on Paul Thek's legacy and Fire Island's distinctive maritime holly forest setting.
• LI oyster farm, arts group give shells new life (libn.com) — Fire Island School District is among the first to receive cleaned oyster shells from a new Long Island Creative Reuse Project, turning farm waste into art materials. An Islip oyster farm and Long Island Arts Alliance are supplying thousands of shells to local schools, museums, and artists, with plans to grow the program responsibly over time.
