FIRE ISLAND, NY — Symbols of hate, which were found drawn on a public sidewalk on Fire Island, are being investigated by police, News 12 reported.
The images included swastikas and were written in chalk in the Village of Ocean Beach, the outlet reported.
The "hateful and offensive symbols" were announced by Mayor James Mallott in a public notice posted to the village's website and Facebook page on Wednesday.
"We want to be clear: this type of hateful imagery has no place in our community. Ocean Beach is built on respect, inclusion, and looking out for one another. Acts intended to intimidate, offend, or spread hate are unacceptable, and do not reflect the values of our residents," village officials stated.
Patch has reached out to the village.
The village became aware of the symbols through social media, then contacted police to investigate, but by the time officers arrived, the symbols were gone, according to officials.
They advised anyone who sees similar symbols to notify the police.
