Deer Culling Operation Underway On Federal Lands Of Fire Island National Seashore, William Floyd Estate

When operations take place, areas of the parks will close for the public's safety, National Park Service officials say.

PATCHOGUE, NY β€” National ParksService officials have issued a reminder to the public that the annual deer culling operation β€” as part of the White-tailed Deer Management Plan β€” is underway this month on Fire Island National Seashore and the William Floyd Estate in Mastic Beach.

The park service is charged with maintaining a balanced ecosystem for the benefit of the environment and for current and future visitors to enjoy, officials said.

White-tailed deer damage plants and eat most native plant species, and having an overabundance of deer in the area shrinks the size of forested areas, preventing forest regeneration, according to officials.

Damage from deer also decreases the habitat available for native birds and other wildlife, they said.

Highly qualified wildlife professionals will carry out the removal operations on both Fire Island and at the estate β€” only on federal lands, officials said, adding that when operations take place, areas of the park will close for the public’s safety.
