2016 Election Preview: 5th Congressional District

Incumbent Gregory Meeks is being challenged by Mike O'Reilly.

Incumbent Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks is being challenged by Republican Mike O’Reilly and Green Party candidate Frank Francois for the 5th Congressional District seat.

Meeks has represented the 5th District since 2013, when the area was redistricted. Before that, he represented the 6th District for more than 10 years, and served five years in the New York State Assembly.

O’Reilly and Francois are both political newcomers, though they have been active in their communities.O’Reilly is a former Marine and pilot for Delta who now works as an attorney. There is not much info available for Francois, but on his Facebook page, he proposed creating a Department of Law Enforcement Accountability.

The Fifth Congressional District encompasses the entire Rockaway Peninsula, Broad Channel, Cambria Heights, Hollis, Jamaica, Laurelton, Queens Village, Rosedale, Saint Albans, Springfield Gardens, South Ozone Park, and Inwood, as well as parts of Valley Stream and Elmont.
