70-Person Firefighting Force Required To Put Out Inwood Blaze, Fire Marshal Says

A three-story home in Inwood was the site of a house fire Monday that drew the response of 70 firefighters, officials say.

INWOOD, NY — Eight residents of an Inwood building are out of their homes Tuesday after a fire broke out just after noon on Memorial Day, the Nassau County Fire Marshal said.

According to the fire marshal’s office, the blaze was called in at 12:04 p.m. Monday, with the Inwood Fire Department first on the scene at the Jeanette Avenue home. Mutual aid from Elmont, Hewlett, Lakeview, Lawrence Cedarhurst, Long Beach, Malverne, Valley Stream and Woodmere fire departments, as well as the Atlantic Beach Rescue, brought the total firefighting presence on the scene to about 70 firefighters, taking 40 minutes to put out the blaze.

There were no injuries reported to civilians or firefighters, the fire marshal’s office said. In the aftermath of the blaze, the Red Cross was contacted to help the displaced residents while the Town of Hempstead Building Department, fire marshal’s office and NCPD arson/bomb squad all began investigations at the scene of the blaze.
