ELMONT, NY — A Nassau County man woke up $1.3 million richer Wednesday, thanks to a winning Powerball ticket that netted him a $2 million prize before taxes.
Elmont resident Jacques Mutombo was at the 7-Eleven on Jericho Drive in Mineola when he bought the ticket, with its numbers drawn March 23. State lottery officials said Mutombo added a “Powerplay” feature to his ticket purchase at the register, which allowed him to automatically double his winnings. When the numbers were drawn — 12, 18, 47, 56 and 63, with a Power Ball 01 — Mutombo’s winnings became $1 million, which doubled to $2 million.
Lottery officials said Mutombo took the lump sum payment option, cashing out at $1,302,001 after tax.
