RC Car Catches Fire While Charging In East Rockaway Home: Fire Department

EAST ROCKAWAY, NY — The East Rockaway Fire Department scrambled to a Lawson Avenue home Thursday afternoon after receiving reports of smoke in the house's basement. Upon arrival, firefighters found the source of the smoke to be a remote control car that had caught fire while charging, the fire department said.

According to the fire department, three fire engines, one ladder unit, an ambulance and a command vehicle responded to the home and extended a hose line to the front door while firefighters investigated the interior.

After finding the RC car, the department said the car was pulled from the home and extinguished while the rest of the home was searched to see if the fire had spread.

In total, the department said personnel worked the fire for an hour. The Nassau County Fire Marshal was also notified and responded to the home, due to the presence of a lithium ion battery in the blaze, the department said.

Fire officials did not report any injuries stemming from the fire.

In the aftermath of the fire, the East Rockaway department reminded residents not to allow lithium ion batteries to charge unattended, and urged them to charge the lithium batteries outside whenever possible.

The department also shared an image of the charred car on social media Thursday.
