ELMONT, NY — There is confusion in Elmont after it was learned that principal Kevin Dougherty would not be part of the new school year.

The district said, according to News 12, Dougherty is taking a sabbatical leave for the 2022-2023 year.

There have been protests at Elmont Memorial High School in seeking transparency from the Sewanhaka Central High School District.

Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages posted a joint statement with her brother, Nassau County Legislator Carrie Solages, who each represent Elmont, "demanding answers over the status" of Dougherty.

The Solages' said their experience with Dougherty showed him to be "a thoughtful and compassionate leader that parents and students speak highly of."

They join with others in the community to "push alongside residents for more clarity," they said in the statement.
