Cops Injured Placing Woman In Custody For Robbing Target: Police

Sapphire Townes faces counts of assault, robbery and resisting arrest, Nassau police say.

VALLEY STREAM, NY — A woman got violent while being taken into custody for stealing items from a Target store at the Green Acres Mall, authorities said.

Sapphire Townes, 30, of Queens, passed all points of sale without attempting to purchase merchandise in her cart on Monday afternoon, police said.

When officers attempted to place Townes under arrest, she became combative, detectives said.

Her actions caused two officers to get treated at a hospital for injuries, police said.

Townes was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of second-degree robbery and two counts of resisting arrest.

She is due to be arraigned on Tuesday in Hempstead.
