Cops: Man Tries to Steal Ice Cream, Punches Cashier Who Caught Him

Man fought cashier who caught him concealing several containers of ice cream and trying to walk out of store without paying, cops said.

An East Rockaway man punched a store cashier after trying to steal several containers of ice cream from a convenience store, according to Nassau County Police.

Detectives said Peter Brown, 49, tried to steal several containers of ice cream from 7-Eleven on Rockaway Turnpike in Lawrence. A 34-year-old cashier stopped Brown after he saw him trying to hide the ice cream and leave the store, cops said.

The two began to struggle before Brown punched the cashier in the eye with a closed fist, police said.

The incident happened at 4:38 a.m. Monday, cops said.

A canine patrol officer was nearby at the time and intervened before placing Brown under arrest, cops said.

Though his left eye was swollen from being punched, the cashier refused medical treatment at the scene.

Brown was charged with second-degree robbery. He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
