Drunk Driver Crashes Into Pole With Passenger: Police

Willie Bryant, who suffered broken bones, is charged with driving while intoxicated early Thursday, Nassau police say.

WOODMERE, NY — A man was arrested early Thursday for driving while intoxicated.

It happened just before 12:30 in Woodmere, when officers were alerted to a car accident at the intersection of Elm Street and Broadway.

Police found a utility pole split in half and a 2018 blue Mercedes SUV in flames with two men lying outside the vehicle, detectives said.

An investigation determined the driver, Willie Bryant, 54, of Far Rockaway, had bloodshot eyes and an alcoholic breath, police said.

Bryant had two broken ankles.

The male passenger, 43, suffered a broken collarbone and cracked ribs.

Bryant was placed in custody and both men were transported to an area hospital.

He is charged with driving while intoxicated, third-degree assault and driving a motor vehicle without a proper license. He will be arraigned as soon as it's medically practical, according to police.
