Firefighter Injured In Effort To Douse Apartment Building Basement Fire, NCFM Says
A fire in the basement of a two-story apartment building left one firefighter injured and several residents displaced, officials say.
VALLEY STREAM, NY — A firefighter was injured and several residents were displaced after a fire broke out in the basement of a North Valley Stream apartment building Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office said the fire broke out in the basement at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, with the Elmont Fire Department responding and receiving assistance from Malverne and Valley Stream departments. In total, there were 45 firefighters on the scene and the fire was brought under control within 45 minutes, officials said.
In the aftermath of the fire, fire officials said one of the firefighters was hospitalized with an ankle injury while several residents of the apartment building were out of a home. The red cross was contacted to help those displaced residents, while the fire marshal and NCPD arson/bomb squad began an investigation of the cause of the fire, officials said.
