First New LIRR Station Opens In Elmont

The station debuts on Saturday as the UBS Arena opens its doors for its first Islanders home game.

ELMONT, NY — For the first time in almost a half-century, the Long Island Railroad has a new station. In concert with the UBS Arena opening this weekend, trains will stop at the new Elmont platform on Saturday.

The station will initially offer eastbound service to the arena, as well as nearby Belmont Park.

"Nothing says New York is back like building bigger and better transportation infrastructure," Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement. "[This] is the type of project that my administration will continue to pursue as we strive to make Long Island more accessible and give Long Islanders the quality public transportation they deserve."

Next summer service will increase when the westbound platform opens. At that time, the Elmont station will provide full-time year-round service.

Once fully operational, the new station will feature two 12-car-long high-level platforms with canopies, elevators compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, a pedestrian overpass, USB charging stations, digital signs with arrival information, Wi-Fi and a state-of-the-art snow melting system embedded in the concrete.

Shuttle buses will be provided at Queens Village and the Elmont stations to UBS Arena for events. From the Elmont station, it's approximately a 10-minute walk to the arena.
