Five Towns Veterans Inducted Into State Hall Of Honor

Assemblywoman Melissa Miller inducted the men at a special ceremony this month.

Assemblywoman Melissa Miller, an Atlantic Beach Republican, recently inducted six local veterans into the New York State Veterans Hall of Honor. The honorees came from all over her district, including Long Beach, Oceanside, Island Park and the Five Towns.

Honorees included John Marino (Island Park), Syd Mandelbaum (Cedarhurst), Daniel MacPhee (Long Beach), Daniel Breier (Oceanside), Frank Santora (Inwood) and Luke Magliaro (Cedarhurst). Boy Scout Troop 116 performed the Color Guard presentation and led attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance before the start of the ceremony.

"The risks veterans have taken during their time of service in order to protect our freedoms is extraordinary and deserves our acknowledgement," said Miller. "I am extremely honored and proud to have inducted these six brave veterans into the Veterans Hall of Honor, giving them the recognition they so rightly deserve."

Honorees were awarded proclamations and praised for their accomplishments while they and guests enjoyed lunch and desserts. Also given out were mementos from the Stars for Our Troops program, which presents veterans with stars from worn and retired American flags and the following message:

"I am part of our American Flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and wind have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten."
