Former Bookkeeper for Elmont Company Altered Paychecks: Cops

The woman than tried to cover it up by making fake payments to vendors, costing the company a total of $17,000, police say.

ELMONT, NY - A former bookkeeper for an Elmont company was arrested on Tuesday for altering her paychecks to give herself more money six times, according to Nassau Police.

Between October and January, 66-year-old Mary Camuti, of Rosedale, while employed as a bookkeeper, altered her paycheck showing a larger amount and then proceeded to cash the checks, police said.

In an effort to cover her actions, Camuti then made fake payments to vendors on the company’s accounting system causing the company to suffer a total loss of $17,000, police said.

Camuti is charged with two counts of third degree grand larceny, two counts of fourth degree grand larceny, and six counts of second degree possession forged instrument, police said.
