Hewlett Fire Department Honors Longtime Members

Former chief and most active ambulance chauffer are recognized.

The honored William "Bill" Lahey and Nazzareno “Mike” Artusa on March 18 for their 50 years of service to the department and the community.  

Former Chief Lahey, a member of Friendship Hook & Ladder Company 3, held several positions within the department, including serving as president from 1967 to 1968, and ultimately serving as chief of department from 1974 to 1976. Following behind Lahey was his son, former Chief Steven Lahey and grandsons, current Chief of Department Ethan Lahey and Second Deputy Chief Stephen Lahey. Ex-Chief W. Lahey also served as a commissioner of the Hewlett Bay Fire District from 1978 to 1993.

Firefighter Artusa is a member of Engine Company 2 and an active participant in Fire-Medic Company 9. During his tenure with the department, Artusa has held several positions within the department and the Exempts Association. Artusa has held the honor of the department’s most active ambulance chauffer from 1997 to present.

Family, friends and department members were in attendance to honor the dedication of Lahey and Artusa. Both members remain active and continue to respond to emergency calls.
