Inaugural Irrigation Technology Expo Dives Into Water Conservation

Town of Hempstead and Liberty New York Water Partner with the Irrigation Association of New York to Showcase Latest Conservation Technology

FEBRUARY 2023 — Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin, in partnership with the Town’s Water Department, Liberty New York Water and the Irrigation Association of New York, recently hosted an inaugural Irrigation Technology Expo. More than 45 local irrigation contractors, as well as representatives from area water providers, explored ways to conserve water and save residents money. Town of Hempstead and Liberty leaders spoke with attendees about the benefits of water-saving technology.

“Reducing the amount of water we use on our irrigation systems is important as it will help preserve our environment, benefit our drinking water infrastructure and reduce costs for both us and our residents,” said Supervisor Don Clavin. “The technology displayed during this event was astounding, and its wider utilization will play a significant role in reducing the amount of water we use on our lawns without sacrificing their health or beauty.”

Presentations focused on the importance of providing cost-effective water conservation tools to customers. Demonstrations of state-of-the-art technology from distributors such as Hunter, Hydro-Rain, K-Rain, Rachio, Rain Bird and Toro highlighted what these tools can do. Smart irrigation technology has proven to effectively lower water consumption. Reducing high water consumption from irrigation systems, particularly in the peak of the summer, can help alleviate low pressure issues and ensure there is adequate flow and pressure to fight fires in the event of an emergency situation.

"When irrigation contractors know about the technological advances in the irrigation field, they can ensure their customers are conserving water and, in turn, lowering their water bills,” said Shannen McDonald, Liberty New York Water Program Manager, Water Efficiency. She also emphasized the importance of following the county’s alternate day watering ordinance and introduced automatic systems zoned map schedule. “Partnering with irrigation contractors allows us to make a greater impact on conservation. Together we can educate customers and make a true impact in the area of conservation.”

This inaugural collaboration between water providers, irrigation companies and irrigation technology manufacturers marks an important contribution to the continued delivery of high-quality water that Long Islanders deserve.
